Poor Puppy...

Hey friends.  I had a terrible scare this week and was beside myself Friday and Saturday.   I thought I was going to have to say goodbye to my forever puppy friend, Peanut.  She's not been acting her typical self for a few days and on Friday I spent all night up with her.  She couldn't sleep, she would contract her stomach and just stare into space...No noise but I could tell she was in pain.  She'd had her tail tucked for days and walked around slowly with her head low.  She wouldn't walk the steps and didn't want to go outside to go potty.  She's 15 and I thought it was coming to that day I have dreaded since I picked her up and carried her home as a baby pup.  I cried and cried...I was up all night cuddling her, comforting her and crying...I kept telling her that I would take her to the doctor in the morning and that I loved her so much.

Poor Puppy...

Morning came and I hurried her to her doctor, crying my eyes out.  They didn't have a doctor in their office on the weekend so I took her to the emergency pet care center farther down the road.  As I walked into that office, I started crying and couldn't hardly contain myself.  I told them she wasn't acting like herself and something was wrong.  The doctor looked her over and asked some questions...then said he didn't think it was the end of the road for her...In fact, he thought it was nothing he couldn't fix and gave me comfort in knowing she was in good hands.  I admitted her to their office for some X-ray procedures and investigative work and drove home without her.  So difficult to do, but encouraged by the doctors words.

I got the call about two and a half hours later that she was ready to be picked up and was ready to come home.  The doctor would be there to explain everything...So I rushed over there to pick up my baby...

The doctor said her X-rays were so clean and beautiful!  She looked PRISTINE for a dog her age and didn't have any of the typical signs of old age for her breed.  He said her bones, heart, and lungs looked very good...SO GOOD.  The problem...She had an absessed anal sac.  He did a procedure to puncture it and drain the fluid.  He explained that it may heal or may need to be removed surgically, but he was confident she would be fine.  He gave antibiotic medicine and sent me on my way.

Poor Puppy...

As I sit here (Sunday) writing this post, She's laying on the floor very still.  She's in so much pain and she has a hole draining with fluid on her bum.   She's followed me around just a little today, always slow and easy, very delicately and...painfully.  I put the electric blanket on her bed and she seems to find some comfort in the warmth of that blanket...Poor Puppy...I hope she recovers soon as it's so difficult to watch her in this pain! The pictures you see here are pictures I took before writing this post today...resting on the towel that covers the electric blanket.  Climbing up on her bed (behind her) is just too painful right now.

Please pray for my puppy!  I'm so grateful to God for allowing me more time with her...She's just too precious to say goodbye so soon.

  3. I know exactly what you are going through! We become so attached to these sweet babies. They give you unconditional love, they don't lie, cheat or steal! Such perfect companions. I lost my sweetie at 17 and I grieved like a family member had passed. It sounds like you will have peanut for a good while yet! So glad the reports were good. She will heal with time and be her old self again soon!

  7. So sorry to hear about little Peanut. She looks adorable. I know what you are feeling, I have two male chihuahuas who both have problems with their anal glands, and now have to be checked by vet every three months to prevent abscess and infection. One of them has had to have surgery twice when he got abscessed and infected, and he really suffered until it healed. You have my heartfelt prayers that she will recover totally and continue to be your friend. They give us unconditional love!
